My favorite part about my business

Most of my friends will tell you that I can go a long duration of time without seeing them. We go months and then out of the blue decide to meet for a lunch or coffee. When we do it’s like we haven’t been separated at ALL! We go out and take turns spilling our guts about life, boys, girls, school, family, and anything we can ramble on about. That is, until the waiters ask how much longer we expect to stay! You may ask how this relates to my business…?

I like to talk to my clients just as I talk to my friends;with no filters, expectations, and a conversation full of laughter. I’d love to say that “photography” is my FAVORITE part of my business but it’s not. Don’t get me wrong! I am addicted to getting great bokeh and warm light in a picture but it’s not the picture that is special to me. It’s the amazing couple that take the foreground in my pictures that makes it all worth while.

I insist on sitting down with a couple before I even get to their engagement pictures because I don’t want to be a vendor, business woman, or photographer to them. I want to be Heather Michelle! A friend invited to their wedding who just happens to be taking pictures. And I think that’s pretty important to know. Why you may ask? I am full of energy and truly care about what you have to say. During a shoot I expect you to be excited and have fun. It’s okay to be nervous but you can tell me anything!! Like, “Hey Heather, this is a really awkward pose” and I will change it up and we will laugh about it. Depending on who your photographer is, you may not feel comfortable to do that!

I’m not perfect and I don’t expect my couples to be either. Hey, if you model as a career that is AMAZING but if you are a waitress, accountant, teacher, work for the government, etc… it may take you time to LOVE having your picture taken!

I have very low expectations for everything! Now, some of you may think this is a bad way to look at life and that’s your opinion. I totally respect that. Just because I have low expectations DOES NOT mean that I don’t dream BIG! My goal last year was to get my 600 blog views in 2013 and double them in 2014. I was completely surprised to see that at the end of 2014 I had 6,320 views. That was a huge positive jump. I also had a goal to try and book 40 weddings by the end of 2015…which still may happen but as of right now it’s not going so well. You may look at this a goal that I did not reach BUT, I have booked 11 amazing couples! I could have had a big ol’ goose egg! I am lucky enough to have these amazing couples in my life! This is what I mean by low expectations… I set a goal and did not reach it. BUT I still look at the good things that are coming my way.

My favorite part of my business is that I get to be me. 24/7. No exceptions. I am not perfect and I don’t want to come across that way. I never expected to write a blog, take wedding pictures, or know so much about cameras. What I did expect was to surround myself with AMAZING people who not only respect me but are my friends. My business has given me that and I am the lucky one.
