Stars Hallow, Coffee, and a little bit of Gilmore

gilmore-girls

I have to admit to all of you that I am a huge coffee drinker. I LOVE it and it loves me back. I started drinking coffee in high school when I began my “oh so” professional career as an actor. I found out very quickly that the thespian world was not mine….but my coffee addiction stuck around.

This brings this personal post to a point! I have been in love with Lorelai Gilmore since I can remember and the more I watched, the more coffee I consumed. Ironic! Recently, Gilmore Girls has made it’s beautiful debut on Netflix and I’m pretty sure my boyfriend can tell when I have watched more than 3 consecutive episodes…my inner Lorelai comes out!

Basically, this show can be summed up into 3 phrases….Stars Hallow, Coffee, and a little bit of Gilmore.

Stars Hallow, the perfect little town gives you that feeling of home. The one you crave when you are far away. I feel like everyone has their little “Stars Hallow” where ladies gossip, crazy traditions take place, and you have that one place that you love to eat regardless the quality of the food.

Coffee is the one thing that brings this show together. You will always find Lorelai making a pot of coffee or hanging at Luke’s with a mug. It consistently gives a reason for her hyper and energizer bunny attitude…along with a witty remark to everything. This coffee addiction isn’t a mere coincidence. I believe that Lorelai’s cup of coffee is the peace maker to the Gilmore family. Although, I could counter that argument with their love of Chinese food…another day 🙂  I also believe that coffee is what makes Lorelai who she is!! You rarely hear it stated that she hadn’t had her cup of Joe and when you do she acts like a completely different person. Hence…Coffee > Free Will

Last but not least….a little bit of Gilmore. Most of my time watching Gilmore Girls is spent laughing and repeating Lorelai quotes in hopes that it will slip out in a normal situation BUT I love the conflict in this show. Lorelai deals with the constant struggle of standing on her own two feet, raising a daughter who sets such a high standard on everything that every other girl in life will never rise to the occasion regardless her doubts…thanks Rory, and avoiding her parents like the plaque. It’s refreshing to see a normal life conflict take place through the entire series. One thing I hate about current shows is the need to try and cover a mass of problems in a short period of time. Although I would love for all the Gilmore clan to make amends, the show teaches us that not all differences can be solved in an hour and that building relationships take time. Even the great Lorelai and Rory have their mother-daughter hair pulling fight…and they always get over it. It may take a few episodes but there is a realistic conflict and realistic resolution.

Gilmore Girls has been a crucial show in my life and has taught me not everything is perfect and you can still somehow achieve everything you want…and be who you want. One of the biggest arguments- Lorelai came from a very privileged world where she could have married Christopher who was destined to be great in the insurance world. At 16, she became pregnant and decided to run to Stars Hallow and start a new life where she worked her way from maid to innkeeper…eventually owning her own inn. She taught me that the expectations others have for you doesn’t have to be your reality. You can design your own dream and make it happen. Thanks Gilmore Girls..
